(Photo: Rail Baltica)The Rail Baltica project has been linked to a military mobility financing of just under €5 million, according to an agreement signed by the Latvian Transport Ministry on Monday with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) on priority activities of the Rail Baltica project, the ministry said on August 8.
According to Public broadcasting of Latvia, the most important activities included in the new financing agreement are the design and supervision of the combined Daugava Bridge Road section, the design of the Salaspils multimodal freight terminal, as well as the design of the airport’s cargo park and its surrounding infrastructure.
This is the first funding granted to Latvia from the new type of European Union aid to Member States to develop transport infrastructure, which would serve both civil and military needs at the same time. The agreement provides for funding of under €5million from the Military Mobility Fund during the period 2021-2027.
The European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy aims to facilitate the movement of military troops and assets, as well as the development of infrastructure in the European Union. The Rail Baltica project already integrates military mobility requirements in its development phase to fully optimize the use of the funds. The support intensity of the Military Mobility Fund shall be 50% of the total amount of the project.
